A comparison of Chinese and Korean paper and ink
The top one is with Chinese ink and paper. The bottom one is with Korean ink and paper. The Korean paper seems to be absorbing the ink much faster and easier to manage.

Assignment 4 - Trompe l'oeil
For the fourth assignment, we needed to do a trompe l'oeil. I tried to produce a warm indoor environment with fresh flowers. Dried flowers and dead tree were barred to the gloomy environment outside. A butterfly and a clock were added to signify passage of time.
Step 1 - Cut and paste some readily available images to see the composition
Step 2 - A water colour sketch to see the colour combination
Steps 3 and 4 - A lots of photos were taken to explore the perspective and lighting effect. Oil pastel sketches were also done to see the effect. Oil pastel was used cause it's quick and if you use it well, it can imitate an oil painting effect.
Step 5 - The under layer
Final! It's what I have expected and wanted though.

Assignment 3 - A portrait of Grandma
Grandma is a very important person to us that I gave her a "Rembrandt" light to further emphasize the importance.
Steps 1 & 2 - The toned background with outlines
Step 3 - Adding more shading
Step 4 - Added the blue to the outfit
Final! Not a good attempt, I have to say.

Assignment 2 - A replication of part of Rembrandt's The Jewish Bride
The shading in earthy tones. The paint was rather thick for this layer, cause the paint wasn't dried quick enough to add on more layers :(
Final! Rembrandt 見到都要激死多一次。

Sketching kit
I am taking an 8-month "short" course on western painting from classical, modern, post modern to contemporary. This is the first assignment -- the long abandoned sketching kit. (How I miss them!)
Steps 1 & 2 - Toned the background and painted the outline.
Step 3 - Added the shading and light, still in earthy tones.
Finally!

I couldn't capture the Cathedral right with my camera. But with a sketch book, there's always a right angle to every thing. Only you would find you lack the skill.

Tapgol Park, the starting point of the March First Independence Movement in 1919. A granny was curiously watching me sketching and taking this photo with my hands shaking.

Since I am already here, and find a good spot at the education corner, I might as well enjoyed a bit of the air condition before I brave the sun (or the thunder storm?) again.
